Procedure of selection of participants

Participants of the Symposium (10 sculptors) will be selected by the symposium organizing committee. 8 from New Zealand & 2 internationals.

All required sketches and documents should be presented in digital form to the organizing committee per e-mail: vis.impact@clear.net.nz not later than the 1st of November 2009.

For the selection process, all artists please include the following

• СV
• 4-8 low resolution photos of previous works by the artist in their chosen material.
• minimum 2 sketches of proposed sculpture from 2-3 sides, or a photos of a model of the planned sculpture from 2-3 sides
• A description of the work’s form & concept. This should include the title of the sculpture, the dimensions and materials. (No more than 70 words)

Results of selection of participants of the symposium will be e-mailed to all applicants by 15^th November 2009.

Important Dates:

Brunch at 10am Wednesday 17^th February.

11:30 Selecting materials ( there will be a selection of wooden logs and hard and soft stone to choose from) If you require materials that are not mentioned please give me your request before the 1st.of February.

12 noon start carving.

Carving between 7:30am – 9:00pm daily. No noisy machinery outside these hours.

Carving end day: 9:00pm Friday the 26^th February. All work must be completed and the grounds on which you worked left tidy by 8:00am Saturday the 27^th.

Exhibition Dates: 12 noon 27^th February – 21st. March 2009

Participant exhibition: The Rusty Dog Studio will be available for artists to show a selection of their paintings, photograghy and small to medium sized sculptures.

All works made during the symposium must be for sale and will incur a 25% commission.

Any other works sold from The Rusty Dog Studio will incur a 10% commission. (please bring some art with you for this purpose)

During the symposium you will get opportunities to share your ideas and talk about art work and techniques with the other artists. We are planning on inviting a supplier of sculptors tools to the event to demonstrate the latest tools available.

Daily meals: Breakfast, morning tea, lunch and an evening meal will be provided by the organiser.

Accommodation: You are invited to stay with the Ferguson Family as their guest for the duration of the symposium.

Flights for international artists: You will be picked up from the Auckland International Airport upon arrival and taken to the Ferguson home. Please let us know your flight details 2 weeks in advance. Please note that you must pay for your own airline tickets.

The symposium provides for the artists

• Accomodation and all meals provided by the symposium organizers.
• Materials for sculptures: stone(a selection of hard and soft stone) wood logs (up to 3.5m x .600mm diam) metal(steel) and concrete by prior arrangement with organisers only
• The individual allowance $3000 NZ dollars on completion of sculpture at the end of the Symposium for 2 selected international artists.
• The organizers will provide compressed air, electricity and basic equipment like the use of chain saws, bench saws, electric drills and you will be able to make use of the large sculpture studio on the site. We recommend that you bring your Personal hand tools like chisels, mallets, side grinders and safety equipment (ear muffs, chainsaw leggings, boots and safety glasses.
• Excursion program. Include exploration of the central city of Auckland, a BBQ at a local surf beach, land yachting (depending on wind) and an evening boat fishing.
• Transport from the Auckland International Airport

The artist undertakes

• To create a sculpture not later than the closing date of the Symposium (the 26th of February 2010)
• To have own electric, air and hand tools.
To have own insurance for all duration of Symposium

The week long ‘Low Flying Cars’ symposium and 3 day exhibition is an opportunity for our guest artists to create works which reflect their diverse culture, social backgrounds and perspective using a variety of mediums including steel, stone, wood and glass.

June 2008 I attended with 14 other artists the Bibliotheca Alexandrina wood sculpture symposium.

This was a fantastic event, very well organized, with very generous and hospitable hosts. The wood used was a local wood called Sarousa (fantastic) My piece stands 1.8m high. All of the works made during the symposium are now the property of the library.

The New Library of Alexandria, the New Bibliotheca Alexandrina is much more than a library. It contains:

• Four art galleries for temporary exhibitions
• Nine permanent exhibitions
